Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Nottingham Forest Claim Sentimental Win Over Malmö
“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” rang out around the City Ground as Forest supporters celebrated another success against Malmö. A great deal has happened since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the continental trophy in the year 1979, but the club continue to cherish those glorious moments. Similarly, significant shifts have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with the team appearing reinvigorated and earning a convincing win thanks to goals from Arnaud Kalimuendo, Yates, and Nikola Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of advancing in the Europa League.
Gaining Momentum with Another Consecutive Win
For Forest, this result – against a Malmö side that had not played for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their domestic league – represented a third consecutive win across all competitions and further built on the momentum gained from the previous week's stunning victory at Liverpool. While this fixture was a reminder of Forest’s European Cup triumph in name, the encounter itself was devoid of any significant tension or jitters.
It proved to be an event filled with nostalgia, an eagerly awaited reunion and the third competitive clash between the sides since the showpiece event 46 years ago.
Forest fully embraced the history, honoring the heroes of 1979 by providing them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Swedish club’s team from then were also present. Both teams enjoyed a meal together prior to the kick-off. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company were given a tumultuous welcome when they gathered on the field 15 minutes before kick-off, and a typically impressive tifo was unveiled in the Trent End.
Recalling the Past
“May 30, 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left flank,” displayed one part of a large tifo, in capital letters. While no one required a reminder of what ensued, the rest was revealed as the players emerged from the tunnel. “There is Francis,” it stated. A second brilliant display depicted Brian Clough watching proceedings beside his right-hand man Taylor on a bench at the Olympiastadion.
Dominance from the Start
So, the hosts had soaked up those wonderful recollections, but what about the performance on the evening? It was strong, too. They were in complete control from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an attempt wide inside two minutes and built a 2-0 advantage by the break. Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Zach Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.
It felt fitting that Ryan Yates, who came to the club as an eight-year-old, made the first dent in the Malmö defence led by their own homegrown captain, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross deflect off a defender and into the path of Yates, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to score his maiden strike since March.
Another Goal Confirms Dominance
Yates was implicated in Forest’s next goal on the verge of the interval, too, his unmarked header saved by Malmö’s shot-stopper Melker Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to tap in the rebound from close range. James McAtee, the midfielder given a seldom start and only his second outing since the autumn, was the spark, lofting a perfect ball towards his teammate at the back post.
A minute earlier, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected aside off Malmö defender Colin Rösler, the son of ex- Man City striker Uwe Rösler, and an free the defender had earlier had a powerful header smartly saved by the keeper, who was back in place of the ex- Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.
Opponent's Difficulties
This was Malmö’s first match since the domestic league concluded on November 9th, and they found it hard to match the home team's intensity. Forest extended the lead to three when the defender scored after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. Yates had a shot blocked, but the Serbia centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the rebound.
The home side then pushed for more, with Hudson-Odoi chipping a effort on to the crossbar before Sangaré sent an optimistic shot off target from distance. It was that kind of evenings. Dyche, aware of Sunday’s domestic fixture here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made seven changes from the side that surprised Liverpool at Anfield recently, when they also netted three times, though he introduced Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs midway through the final period.
Hiccup-Free Night for the Team
It turned out to be a flawless evening for Forest. Dyche could take off the defender with the game long since sewn up and subsequently brought on 19-year-old full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. He talked about the Forest old guard providing “bits of gold” at regular meetings and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are capable of a few nuggets of thrills, too.
